Collagen Induction Therapy or Microneedling isn’t a new treatment, but it has experienced a resurgence in the last decade. Some track microneedling back to the early 1900s, when a German dermatologist used needles to treat acne scars and hyperpigmentation.
How Does Microneedling work?
Each time you get injured, the body rushes growth factors, platelets, and collagen to heal the injured area. Specialists use microneedling to create tiny, controlled injuries that take advantage of the body’s healing mechanisms to target specific skin imperfections such as acne, scarring, enlarged pores, and wrinkles.
Our specialist at Colorado Skin Care, Dr. Kimberly Stone, often uses microneedling to treat various skin imperfections. Below, we asked her to share some benefits of using microneedling to improve the appearance of the skin.
1. No risk for allergic reactions and sensitivities
Some topicals used to treat acne, hyperpigmentation, and wrinkles can cause allergic reactions in certain individuals. Other substances can make the skin more sensitive to sun exposure or lead to clogged pores and breakouts.
However, when Dr. Stone uses tiny needles to puncture your skin, she doesn’t use anything other than your body’s own defense mechanisms to clear up your skin imperfections.
2. Easy recovery
You’re asked to lay down and relax while Dr. Stone applies a numbing gel for your comfort. Then she uses either a rolling tool covered in tiny needles or a pen with a tiny needle to puncture your skin. The procedure lasts anywhere between 10 and 20 minutes.
Unlike chemical peels and laser treatments, which may lead to excessive skin peeling, microneedling doesn’t cause any peeling after the treatment. You may experience some redness, but you should be able to return to your daily routine immediately.
3. Boosts collagen and fights signs of aging
Collagen is crucial for maintaining plump and elastic skin. It’s a protein that enables healing, and it helps prevent and treat fine lines and wrinkles. According to studies, microneedling can boost collagen for six months after the first treatment.
4. Erases sun spots and hyperpigmentation
Sunspots and pigmentation left after pimples can be tackled with microneedling. By puncturing the skin, the needles encourage the growth of a new and healthier skin layer, replacing the pigmented skin with a spotless layer of skin.
Find out if microneedling is the right treatment for you
Microneedling is a safe and effective treatment for many skin concerns, but not everyone is a good candidate. Patients with active acne or patients who are currently taking Accutane may be recommended other types of treatments to tackle their cosmetic issues.
