Are you about to get Botox for the first time? Let’s take a closer look at a few things you need to know about the procedure, including a few Botox dos and don’ts.
What Should You Do Before And After Botox Treatment?
Cosmetic Botox injections are used to relax the facial muscles temporarily. It’s important to know, the first time Botox is injected, it needs time to act. The effect of the treatment will be visible in 2-8 days after the procedure.
How does it work?
To put it simply, Botox relaxes the facial muscles that cause wrinkles (around the mouth, forehead and the eyes). Botox injections block certain chemical signals from nerves, mostly signals that cause these muscles to contract and form wrinkles. Let’s take a closer look on how to prepare for your Botox procedure.
Can I drink caffeine before Botox?
Caffeine before Botox is strictly prohibited for at least for 24 hours before your procedure is set to take place. You should also take care to avoid other drinks and even foods that have a dehydrating tendency, as this could alter the healing process. You should also take the appropriate steps to reduce your salt intake for a couple of days before the appointment with the doctor, especially if you are getting Botox or dermal fillers.
Before Botox procedure
To ensure the success of the procedure, there are several tips you need to consider. These include:
Avoid fish oil, multivitamins, green tea, ginger, and do not drink alcoholic drinks especially red wine (one week before the procedure).
Avoid foods that contain garlic and cinnamon, as they increase the risk of bruising.
Anti-Inflammatory Medications need to be avoided one week before the procedure.
Avoid any additional facial treatments such as microdermabrasion, chemical peels and massages.
Ask your doctor before any procedure so it doesn’t conflict with any of your current medications, medical conditions, pregnancy, or allergies.
After Botox procedure
After a cosmetic Botox procedure, you may experience some side effects, including mild discomfort at the injection sites. Here are some tips on how to manage the swelling and discomfort associated with the treatment.
After getting Botox is it recommended to avoid drinking alcohol for 24 hours, since it can increase the risk of bruising and dehydration.
Along with alcohol you should avoid drinking excessive caffeine before or after your procedure, in order not to dehydrate and increase your heart rate. By increasing your heart rate and blood flow, the Botox can destroy itself more quickly before the skin tightening effects have time to take place.
Do not lay down for at least 4 hours
Drink plenty of water and apply an ice pack, if needed.
Botox injections are temporary
Generally speaking, Botox lasts around 3-4 months. This period may vary for every individual. After the first Botox injection, you may notice that it does not last for an extensive period of time. This may change after the second treatment. In order to maintain the effect, you will need regular follow-up injections.
