What is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal uses concentrated beams of light to destroy hair follicles, inhibiting the future growth of hair in the treated area. It’s one of the most popular treatments for men and women at Colorado Skin Care.

Laser hair removal can target unwanted hair nearly anywhere on the body, including:

  • Face (including upper lip, chin, and cheeks)
  • Neck
  • Arms (including underarms)
  • Legs
  • Back
  • Chest
  • Bikini line
  • Brazilian (pubic area)
  • Abdomen
  • Shoulders
  • Hands and fingers
  • Feet and toes
  • Ears

The aesthetic team can even perform full-body treatments for smooth skin from head to toe.

How does laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal beams specific wavelengths of light directly into the targeted hair follicles. The melanin (pigment) in the hair absorbs the light, which transforms into heat and destroys the follicle. This process prevents the follicle from producing new hair growth.

How do I prepare for my first laser hair removal treatment?

A few steps you can take to prepare your skin for laser hair removal include:

Avoid sun exposure

Minimize sun exposure, and avoid tanning beds for at least four to six weeks before your treatment.

Refrain from certain hair removal methods

Avoid waxing, plucking, or using hair removal creams for a few weeks before the treatment. The laser targets hair follicles, and these methods remove the hair shaft, making the treatment less effective.

Shave the treatment area

On the day of your session, shave the treatment area. This helps the laser focus on the hair follicles beneath the skin's surface rather than the hair above it.

Avoid certain skin care products

Skip perfumes, deodorants, or skin care products with potential irritants on the day of your treatment.

What can I expect from laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal sessions can last 5-60 minutes, depending on the number and size of your treatment areas.

Once you’re comfortable, the team applies a topical numbing cream to the targeted area. Next, they beam the laser into the hair follicles. You may feel a mild pricking or snapping sensation.

Expect your skin to be red, tender, and slightly swollen after laser hair removal, but these effects should subside within a few hours. Most people need about six to eight sessions to see permanent hair reduction.
