How Botox® Works Behind the Scenes to Minimize Wrinkles

How Botox® Works Behind the Scenes to Minimize Wrinkles

Aug 13, 2024

Have you considered getting Botox® but still feel unsure if the treatment is right for you? Many people remain on the fence about this procedure simply because they don’t understand how it works to minimize wrinkles.

At Colorado Skin Care, we understand the ins and outs of Botox, as well as how and why the treatment might serve you. Our provider — Kimberly Stone, MD — has over 20 years of experience with cosmetic dermatology, and she, as well as the rest of our staff, are delighted to help you get the look you want.

All about wrinkles

Wrinkles are a natural sign of aging, but for many people, they come too early and create self-esteem issues. People often don’t realize that there are actually two kinds of wrinkles: dynamic and static. Understanding this can help you recognize what you really want from a wrinkle-defying treatment like Botox.

Dynamic wrinkles are those that occur when we express emotions, such as laugh lines around the mouth, crow’s feet around the eyes, and frown lines between the eyebrows. When our faces go back to a neutral position, the wrinkles disappear. Static wrinkles, on the other hand, don’t disappear when our facial expressions change.

Over time, dynamic wrinkles can become static, simply because there’s less collagen production in the skin as you age. The lines that once disappeared and now don’t are usually those that cause the most discomfort and embarrassment, meaning many people want to get rid of them.

Botox 101: what it is and how it works

You may still be wondering, though, how Botox actually works to minimize facial wrinkles. Botox is an injectable treatment of botulinum toxin, which temporarily paralyzes the muscles of the face. Through this, it helps to avoid the movements that create dynamic wrinkles, which then become static wrinkles.

When the facial muscles aren’t able to move as freely, it keeps the skin from creating dynamic wrinkles, working behind the scenes to ensure you look more youthful. Many people also pair dermal filler treatment with this regimen in order to treat static wrinkles that have already formed.

Botox is perfectly safe to administer to most individuals, and it requires no downtime afterward. We perform Botox injections here at our Englewood, Colorado, office that can be done on your lunch break! In order to maintain results, we recommend getting follow-up injections every three to four months.

Is Botox right for me?

Some people choose to get Botox before certain wrinkles have even formed in order to avoid the early signs of aging. Others may choose to get Botox as a way to keep wrinkles that have started forming from getting deeper and more noticeable. But the best way to know if Botox is right for you is to have a chat with the doctor.
